Ferrington Vineyard, nestled in the heart of the Anderson Valley AVA just an hour north of Sonoma County, is considered one of the region’s crown jewels. Surrounded by towering redwoods and bordering the Mendocino coastline, the vineyard benefits from a dynamic climate with dramatic temperature shifts between day and night. Originally planted in the 1970s by Dr. Ferrington, the vineyard spans 70 acres of rich valley floor soils. It is home to three distinct clones of Chardonnay, with our wine exclusively sourced from the Old Wente clone. Ferrington Vineyard Chardonnay is a true expression of the region’s potential, showcasing the perfect balance between the cool, maritime climate and the fertile soils, producing wines of exceptional complexity and depth.
The 2022 Ferrington Chardonnay from Anderson Valley embodies the balance, power, and nuance that one might expect from the finest white Burgundies. Its aromatic profile opens with ripe citrus, white flowers, and a subtle hint of toasted hazelnut, offering a glimpse of the complexity to come. On the palate, this wine strikes a perfect equilibrium between richness and refinement. Bright, crisp acidity lifts the generous fruit core of ripe peach, quince, and lemon zest, while nuanced layers of roasted almond, light toast, and savory herbs provide added depth. The oak is expertly integrated, contributing a delicate layer of warmth without overwhelming the fruit. The mouthfeel is both luxurious and precise, displaying a textural richness that remains graceful throughout. With a long, elegant finish, this wine showcases the unique terroir of the Ferrington Vineyard and the cool, maritime influences of Anderson Valley, offering a beautifully balanced expression that recalls the hallmark style of the world’s great Burgundy producers.
With our Ferrington, we are age in 100% new Damy puncheons, a larger 500L format I find is the perfect vessel for extended 24 month aging on the lees. The wine ages without being stirred or racked, which is a method used by many of the top white Burgundy producers that I enjoy. For both Chardonnay and Pinot, we have also extended the aging time in bottle to 18 months, giving the wines time to open up and become even more expressive upon opening.
